Samsung Mobile Display

Samsung LogoSamsung Mobile Display (SMD), formed in 2008, is owned by Samsung Electronics (64%) and Samsung SDI (36%). SDM is mass-producing OLED displays (both AMOLEDs and PMOLEDs) primarily for the mobile phone display market. SMD are also working on larger OLED panels and OLED lighting, and researching flexible and transparent displays (in fact the company hopes to start producing plastic based flexible OLEDs in 2012).

SMD is the world's largest AMOLED panel maker by far, and currently produce panels up to 7.7" in size. Towards the end of 2012 the company will also start producing 55" OLED panels.

In February 2010, SMD announced the Super-AMOLED display that has an integrated touch panel which results in better visibility under sunlight. Super AMOLED displays (and the Super-AMOLED-Plus variant) are considered the best mobile displays on the market today.

SMD is investing massivly into OLED capacity - 2011's investment totaled $4.8 billion, and this is planned to grow to $6.1 billion in 2012.
