OLED Television

OLEDs have the potential to make exciting TVs (or computer displays). OLED are bright, ulta-thin, consume low power, and they show beautiful pictures. 

In december 2007 Sony started to sell the first OLED TV, the XEL-1 (11") at a high price and in limited quantities. Production cost are still high (Although theoretically OLEDs may become cheaper than LCD), and there is still some issues with lifetime and power consumption. It might take a few years yet until OLED become competitive with LCD or Plasma displays.

Sumitomo Chemical to Launch 40" OLED TV production in 2009

Sumitomo Chemical said that in 2009, it plans to launch the production and sales of large-screen OLED display panels for use in televisions of 40 inches or larger. They are also considering forming alliances for the development of the panels.


Toshiba to ship small/medium OLED displays in autumn, postponing the launch of larger OLED TVs

Japanese electronics maker Toshiba Corp said on Thursday it plans to ship small-to-medium size organic light-emitting diode displays for mobile devices in the autumn, adding that it had postponed its launch of larger OLED TVs (originally planned for 2009)


DisplaySearch: Sony’s OLED Lifespan Rated At 17,000 Hours

In a new report released Wednesday on the characterization of AMOLED display technology, DisplaySearch addressed the Sony XEL-1 TV and the technology’s sub-pixel architecture, micro cavity, and compensation circuits.


LG Display to make 32" OLED TVs in 2011

LG Display has deployed into the development of AMOLED panels. Despite that AMOLED is mostly applied in small-size panels, LG Display said it would continue investing in the large-size segment, with volume production of 32-inch OLED TVs scheduled for 2011.


Samsung SDI: OLED TVs in 2009, flexible ones in 2010. Will double AMOLED capacity in 2009 and in 2010.

Samsung SDI says that large-size applications (OLED TVs, monitors, etc.) will adopt AMOLEDs in 2009, and flexible OLEDs will arrive in 2010. Samsung SDI is currently producing 1.5 million panels, and they will double that in 2009, and in 2010 double again to 6 million.

Sony's 11" OLED TV (XEL-1) is now availble to purchase from Amazon. It costs 2,500$, and ships only to the US.
