The US Department of Energy (DoE) has selected eight solid-state lighting (SSL) research and product development projects that will receive total funding of $13.3 million.
One of the product related projcets, which is pursued by General Electric, involves building an organic LED (OLED) white-light source with an area of 0.35m2 that has an output comparable to that of a standard 60W incandescent lamp.
OLEDs also feature in two of the six research projects that require a 20 percent contribution from the participants, but the other four involve compound semiconductor chip development.
